Independent media are an essential element for a vibrant civic space and a consolidated democracy. In recent years, the region and the world have been experiencing great challenges to freedom of expression and press freedom in the context of fake news, governments and the media. These challenges include the use of the justice system to criminalize journalists, attacks on the life and integrity of journalists, strategies to limit the media’s ability to operate, and the use of the media as a means of communication.
