Although remittances are a financial pillar of the region, the uprooting and exclusion from public debate of millions of emigrants have limited their political impact. This situation may be changing. The technological revolution of voting abroad, the creation of diaspora parties in El Salvador, and the new Nicaraguan political exodus have opened new possibilities for the migrant population to play a leading role in national processes. What would a Central America that includes its diaspora look like? Can those who left help save our democracies?
