José Rubén Zamora has dedicated his career to investigating corruption and impunity in Guatemala. His internationally recognized work led to his arbitrary detention on July 2022 and 1,295 days in pretrial detention.

Although Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience and the Constitutional Court of Guatemala upheld his conditional release in July 2026, José Rubén remains under house arrest. He still faces ongoing legal proceedings and is prohibited from receiving medical care abroad, despite his fragile health.

José Rubén will share his testimony with the CADF 2026 audience regarding the true cost and demands of practicing independent journalism in Central America, along with his tireless fight for justice for himself and for all those who defend the freedom of expression.
